But…you’re a girl!

Well, I’ll give you points for stating the obvious, I suppose.

Apologies for the continuing sports theme of my current posts. I’m slightly worried I’m going to be giving off some idea that I’m a ridiculously sporty person – so, just to clarify, I’m not. It just seems to be the way that funny things happen to me when I’m about to do / doing / just finished doing exercise!

So, I was on my way to university on Monday to meet one of my friends to play football and just as I was about to cross the road, the lights changed so I stood there patiently and waited for the green man to return.

I stood there bopping away to my Ipod (and probably singing to myself although I can’t quite remember) and a very wrinkly granny came up to me, tapped me on the shoulder and pulled my headphone out my ear. Yes, yes she did!

She looked me up and down before saying, rather loudly in Chinese, “What are you doing?”

Somewhat confused I replied “…I’m waiting for the lights to change..”

She was not impressed. “Why are you wearing these clothes?” she asked.

I was wearing a hoody and black shorts and trainers…nothing particularly special. Okay…I’ll admit my shorts were a tad short but nothing to go crazy over…

But everyone was starting to stare now..and me and my slighty-short black shorts were starting to feel a tad insecure…

“Well, I’m going to play football”, I replied.

Wrong Answer.

“Football? FOOTBALL??” she practically shouted at me- and anyone who wasn’t looking before now definitely was – “But – YOU’RE A GIRL!”.

“I know” I replied somewhat meekly… unsure of what was going to happen next.

She gave me a rather disgusted look and muttered something in Chinese – but I have no idea what it was…

Thankfully, I was rescued by the little green man so I stuck my headphone back in and  jogged the whole way to school – heaven forbid anyone else try to tell me off.

My friend and I started playing football with two other  BNU students  and I recounted my experience – they both laughed and said “Yes, because they think you’re a girl so you have to stay at home!”

I would have no problem with someone telling me I can’t play football because of my lack of skills (that would definitely be true!) but telling me I can’t play for the simple reason that I’m a girl….well, I have something to say to you.

CHALLENGE ACCEPTED.
